Prof. V.S.Chandrasekaran served at IIT Bombay in several capacities, as Professor Civil Engineering, Head of Department of Civil Engineering, Coordinator Offshore Engineering and Dean of Planning. IIT Bombay honoured him with the title 'Professor Emeritus' and also conferred on him the Life Time Achievement Award.

He is a recipient of Indian Geotechnical Society Honorary Fellowship, IGS Kueckelmann award and Vasvik award. Several premier national organizations have benefited by his professional expertise. He has numerous research publications in international journals and conferences in the field of Civil Engineering.

He was the Principal Investigator of Geotechnical Centrifuge Project and established the 'National Geotechnical Centrifuge Facility' at the IIT Bombay. This indigenously built (250 g-ton capacity) centrifuge is the only such facility in India and caters to the needs of research and industry. His research interests include engineering modeling, offshore structures and solar radiation mapping.

Professor V.S. Chandrasekaran obtained his B.E. in Civil Engineering from University of Mysore, M.Sc.(Engg.) from College of Engineering Guindy, University of Madras and , Ph.D. from the University of Liverpool (UK) .
